NEW GUIDELINES - No easy admission for foreign students in AP

Hyderabad: Foreign nationals and People of Indian Origin (PIOs) beware as getting admission in colleges of Hyderabad will be a herculean task after a Criminal Investigation Department probe revealed foreign students are easily admitted without checking their basic credentials.
Following the probe report, the higher education department has come up with a slew of guidelines which will make it extremely difficult for foreigners to gain entry into hundreds of institutes in engineering, pharma and management courses. “Ensure the interests of the country and its security concerns before giving admission,” the latest GO issued by the Department of Higher Education says.
As per the new guidelines, the institutions will have to submit complete list of students admitted with background and track record of the students, passport particulars, residential addresses, visa documents.
During the last two years, around 800 such students have been admitted in professional courses in the state. The government has also formed a committee involving commissioner of technical education, secretary AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) and joint director, Commissioner of Technical Education.
The commissioner of technical education has been given the charge of furnishing records of students for verification to the police. The secretary, APSCHE will verify academic credentials of the candidates as per All India Council for Technical Education guidelines. The relevant information gathered after verification will be sent to the state government for onward transmission to the Ministry of External Affairs and All India Council for Technical Education, New Delhi and also to the registrar of the university concerned.
“Students were illegally admitted with or without knowledge of the managements. Admission season creates anxiety and managements do not want to lose candidates,” said an expert. “With students getting admission under the management quota, they become all the more important and hence no seriousness is shown by the managements with regard to checking their credentials,” he added.
Most foreign students are from African countries, West Asia and some war-torn countries like Sudan and Iraq, among others, including Iran where proper higher education is not available. With India being one of the most economical avenues, lot of students prefer pursuing professional courses here, but in the wake of back-toback terror attacks, security agencies are not leaving anything to chance.
